Did you know that in Danish culture it is traditional to leave bowls of warm rice pudding out on Christmas Eve? This holiday tradition is said to keep the nisse (tiny, gnome-like creatures that are found in Danish folklore) happy so they will not play tricks. In Winterfrost by Michelle Houts, Bettina’s family forgets to follow this tradition when her mother and father are called away unexpectedly on Christmas Eve. This sets in motion a series of events that leads to Bettina’s sister’s disappearance. Now Bettina must shrink down to the size of the nisse and work with them in order to rescue her sister.
